Georgia Military College adding Center of Excellence

Jun. 10—Georgia Military College staff gathered around the diagram of the upcoming Academic Center for Excellence picking out offices (little did they know those were already assigned).

Still, the college was celebrating progress Tuesday by breaking ground on the Academic Center of Excellence, a new building to be located at Baldwin and Jefferson streets. The Center is based on a design by architect Scott Fry of Fry Design Group, and construction will be done by RW Allen Construction.

The goal is to hold the grand opening in exactly one year's time.

George Hogan, chairman of the GMC Board of Trustees, said this is a 9,800 square foot state-of-the-art facility to support the college's primary initiatives and contribute to student success. He said the board is grateful to the leadership of the college and to the Georgia Governor's office and General Assembly for the financial support for this project.

"This new facility will provide enhanced opportunities ... at the highest level," he said. "We all look forward to the benefits this will bring to our students to help them achieve their goals."

Dr. Susan Isaac, the senior vice president, chief academic officer and dean of faculty, explained all that will be in the Academic Center for Excellence. She said the vision was for a facility that contributed to student success, and for the first time GMC will have one place for all academic affairs administration: operations, institutional research, planning, the teaching and learning center, records, the registrar's office, military and veterans services and academic success center overseeing student support services (tutoring, advising, mentoring, etc.).

"The building will house a training facility with a reception area that can be used to host events," said Dr. Isaac. "Office spaces, a conference room, collaboration spaces, and a sound proof technology room for filming and producing training videos."

The collaborative work leading up to the groundbreaking — designing and seeking funds — began three years ago.

"Today's success stems from an institutional team effort," said Dr. Isaac.

GMC president Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV said Fry's design will blend in with the entire south campus area. He said Allen Construction is already working on the new Center for Leadership and is excited to see what they will do with this next project.

"Today, I want to thank the Board of Trustees," he said. "I have to wander through about seven different buildings to find (Dr. Isaac). And then she's never there. 'She just left.' If you haven't done it, you have to try to find Dr. Isaac. Now, she won't be able to 'just leave.' I'll be right there. I'll be able to walk in and find her.

"There is continually something in each of those old dilapidated buildings (some infestation of fleas, leaks or no hot water). If I've heard (Vice-President of Engineering Services) Jeff Gray say it once, I've heard him say it 50 times. 'Sir, those buildings need to come down.' We are going to finally give you your wish."

Lt. Gen. Caldwell said Rep. Rick Williams was one of those to strongly advocate education and lobbied hard for the funding to GMC. Rep. Williams said he was glad to be a part of the groundbreaking and appreciated the GMC legacy of assisting its students to become great leaders.

The Parent Coalition for Academic Excellence argued that students who had earned high enough grades were deprived from admission to the Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the O’Bryant School of Math and Science due to the lack of admittance allotted to their ZIP codes under the temporary policy.
