A Worcester apartment building was evacuated Friday afternoon after the roof partially collapsed, officials said.

All 32 units at 257 Mill St. were evacuated Friday after the roof collapsed into the third and second floors, Acting Deputy Chief Adam Roche said.

No one was injured during the incident and all residents inside the building, the total number which has not yet been confirmed, were evacuated safely, Roche said.

Roofers were working on the building’s roof Friday and had placed stone and foam insulation materials on the roof, however, a determination on what caused the collapse has not yet been made, Roche said.

A structural engineer will need to determine whether the building is stable or not before residents can return, officials said.

Two balconies also caved as a result of the partial collapse.

“The joists to the balconies, it appears, are tied into the floor and ceiling joists so that them to collapse in the weight of those, caused them to shift upward,” Roche said.
