Kitchn is a source of inspiration for a happier, healthier life in your kitchen.

You know them, you might hate them: your sliding closet doors. These space-saving closet doors appear in so many homes and apartments and if you have them, you probably do the most to hide them. But one viral TikTok will change the way you think about your sliding closet doors.

TikTok user and serial DIY fanatic Sharee (@sharee.designs) remodeled her closet doors using some MDF, wood glue, and paint. The final result is stunning and totally elevated her room.

The first step in this project is to remove your closet doors and purchase a few sheets of ¼” MDF from the hardware store. Sharee decided on this diagonal panel design, which required her to simply cut her MDF down into uniform panels and glue them to the doors in a diagonal stack.

Then, simply cut away any excess overhang and paint your brand-new facades (Sharee used Prarie Smoke by Magnolia). Reinstall and you’re done!

Sharee also added new trim around the outside of her closet and painted the recessed knobs a brass color to make the closet more of a feature in the room.

Because the ¼” MDF is super thin, you shouldn’t have to replace any of the slider tracks to reinstall the doors. “I didn’t have to alter tracks. ¼” is thin enough,” Sharee responded to a commenter. “There’s a screw that rubs a little on the top of the back door. But other than that it’s fine.”

If you’re tired of staring at those paneled closet doors, then it’s time for a refresh. Put aside an afternoon for this makeover and by the time you’re done, you’ll be tempted to redo every sliding closet door in your house.
