Study pods have been installed at the void decks of three HDB blocks in Boon Lay, as part of a year-long pilot between the Housing Board, People’s Association and pod provider Burztech. 

The pods are part of a pilot programme that will last till July 2023.

Each of the portable enclosed cubicles can accommodate up to two people. It will provide a conducive and private environment for residents to work or study, according to a Straits Times article quoting Minister for National Development Desmond Lee.

Such study pods were previously introduced at community spaces in Clementi, Bukit Timah and Keat Hong at the end of 2021 as part of ongoing pilots.

The three pods were installed last month at Block 260 Boon Lay Drive, Block 183C Boon Lay Avenue and Block 674B Jurong West Street 65.

All of the pods are air-conditioned and soundproof, with Wi-Fi connectivity and two power sockets each. About 5,000 residents will benefit from the pods, reported Straits Times. 

The initiative caters to residents’ requests for quiet and accessible working spaces during the pandemic, said the People’s Association. Should the pilots prove to be successful, more pods may be set up in other estates, the Straits Times report added. 

The pod costs $0.06 per minute to use from now till Oct 10, as part of a launch promotion, before rising to $0.075 per minute. Bookings for the pods can be done through the Burztech app, up to two weeks in advance.

The Boon Lay Community Development and Welfare Fund has also handed out 35 hours of credit (worth $150) to 25 lower-income students, which covers their pod usage till December.
